Bose QuietComfort 35 (Series II) Wireless Headphones, Noise Cancelling – Black

I’m not going to lie – this is a big-ticket item. The price tag is not for the faint-hearted nor the shallow-pocketed. However, I am truly impressed by the incredible ability¬†of these headphones to drown out background noise. As a coder, I have been known to put on headphones and blast any and every kind of music – classical, EDM, ambient, mellow guitar and island music, even reggaeton – just to eliminate the constant distractions of an open-office workplace. These Bose headphones work great just as noise-cancelers, and even better as a listening device.

Years ago I bought an early version of some Bose noise canceling earbuds for use on airplane rides. They worked, but not very well. In fact not well at all. I couldn’t find any noise canceling advantage they offered but the buds were in-canal which was uncomfortable but effective at drowning out all sounds. Before long the wire pulled tugged out and they became useless even as ordinary earbuds.

The other day a colleague let me try her Bose headphones. I admit I was extremely skeptical. I figured that they were just ear-covering headphones so they just muted sounds but didn’t truly cancel very well. Friend, I was wrong. Through multiple impromptu experiments trying them with the canceling off, on, and with music playing, I found that I didn’t realize just how much ambient noise I am forced to ignore on a daily basis.

If your goal is to focus, and what coder doesn’t want to focus, these will help. On the homepage, I pledge never to recommend a product I haven’t tested or don’t believe in. This is a product I believe in. Put them on your holiday wish list or on your gift guide for the geek in your life – or anyone who needs to focus in order to work. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
